A bicoastal collaborative project sparked by shared histories and Covid isolation culminated in a gallery display in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I realize in retrospect that I was raised in a family of creatives. My dad was a concert pianist (as was my paternal grandmother) prior to practicing dentistry. I would watch as he would spend hours waxing and carving teeth for gold castings to reproduce natural tooth anatomy. My mom was a Pratt Art school graduate where she studied fashion design. My maternal grandfather would paint handmade cards penned with original poetry that he would gift to family to commemorate birthdays and special occasions.
The creative zone is a gift of relaxation as it leaves me oblivious to the passage of time. My photos are mostly snapped quickly in brilliant California sunlight and many times the (addictive) editiing process to refine the images reveal details otherwise missed. The reassuring resiliency of perennials are particularly uplifting and I am often drawn to capture bold colors and unique forms. I hope to do justice to their distinctive and often times anthropomorphic features in sharing their ephemeral beauty.
